Cortes races to title at Fighting Bee invite

BETTENDORF - Mount Mercy senior Vanessa Cortes claimed top honors at  the Fighting Bee Invitational cross country race Saturday in Bettendorf.

Cortes covered the 5,000 meter layout in 19 minutes, 5 seconds for a  19.5-second victory in a field of 84 contestants.

The Mount Mercy women's cross country team finished second out of  eight teams. Emily Erickson placed sixth in 20:03.5.

Jacob Blackmon of Mount Mercy placed third in the men's race in 26  minutes, 42.2 seconds for 8,000 meters out of 73 runners. Cameron  Steffens of Mount Mercy finished fifth and Aaron Golding was ninth to  help the Mustangs place second out of six teams in a tight race,  finishing just two points behind Trinity Christian.

Bean helps Mustangs kick Graceland

Thomas Bean scored two goals Saturday to help the Mount Mercy men's  soccer team blank Graceland, 4-0, in a Heart of America Conference  match at the Plaster Athletic Complex.

Oguzhan Bozkan and Nolan Armstrong also scored for the Mustangs. Kevin  Kastl, Jonathan Scholes and Nabil Abugattas had assists.

Matias da Fonseca made three saves for the shutout.

No. 19 Eagles fall to ranked teams

FORT DODGE - The Kirkwood women's volleyball team lost to a pair of  ranked teams at the Triton Invitational in Fort Dodge Saturday.

The 19th-ranked Eagles fell to No. 4 Cowley, 21-25, 22-25, 25-10,  25-13, 15-11, despite taking a 2-0 lead after the first two sets.

Kirkwood bowed to No. 18 North Dakota College of Science, 23-25,  25-22, 25-18, 28-26, after grabbing the first set in that match.

The twin defeats dropped the Eagles to 20-12 for the season.

Mount Mercy spiked by Evangel

The Mount Mercy women's volleyball team lost to Evangel, 16-25, 25-17,  25-22, 16-25, 15-7, in a Heart of America Conference match Saturday at  the Hennessey Recreation Center.

The Mustangs fell to 16-9 overall and 6-6 in the conference. Evangel  raised its records to 19-7 overall and 6-5 in the league.

Stammer paces Mount Mercy golfers

SILVIS, Ill. - Kayla Stammer of Mount Mercy shot a 13-over-par 85  Saturday and is tied for third place heading into the final round of  the TPC Deere Run Invitational.

Stammer trails Brittany Evans of William Penn by six shots.

Mount Mercy sits in third place out of 12 teams after 18 holes.  William Penn leads the tournament by two shots over Oklahoma Wesleyan  and nine shots over the Mustangs.
