Bruyeres leads Mustangs at Wildcat Cup

INDIANAPOLIS - William Bruyeres of Mount Mercy fired a 2-under-par 70  on Monday and is tied for third place after the first round of the  Wildcat Cup at the Brickyard Crossing golf course.

Cameron Luczka of Indiana Wesleyan tore the course apart and holds the  lead at 7-under 65 entering the final round on Tuesday.

Philip Nelson shot an even-par 72 for Mount Mercy. The Mustangs are  tied for fifth place in the team standings at 10-over 298, sitting  eight shots behind the leader entering the final 18 holes.

Campbell shines for Mount Mercy baseball

Dylan Campbell tossed seven shutout innings Sunday as the Mount Mercy  Mustangs blanked Grand View, 8-0, in a Heart of America Conference  baseball game at the Plaster Athletic Complex.

Campbell (3-4) allowed six hits in seven innings, with six strikeouts  and two walks. Brady Donohue and Travis Bowman pitched one inning  apiece in relief to finish the shutout.

Mount Mercy raised its records to 16-17 overall and 11-12 in the  conference. Grand View fell to 6-16 overall and 5-9 in the league.

Hocker, Bouman toss shutouts for KCC

The Kirkwood softball team was able to take a rest on defense during  the first game of its ICCAC doubleheader against Southwestern on  Sunday at the Kirkwood field.

The Eagles blanked Southwestern, 10-0, in five innings as pitcher Erin  Hocker got 13 of the 15 outs with strikeouts. Hocker (13-5) finished  with a two-hitter with no walks.

Kirkwood defeated Southwestern, 8-0, in five innings of the nightcap  on a six-hitter by Bradee Bouman.

The sweep lifted the seventh-ranked Eagles to 25-8 overall and 8-2 in  the conference. Southwestern fell to 6-19 overall and 2-8 in the league.

Brister stars as Kirkwood splits

MASON CITY - Brennan Brister belted two home runs and collected seven  RBIs as the Kirkwood Eagles rolled by NIACC, 18-6, in the second game  of their conference doubleheader in Mason City Sunday.

NIACC took the first game, 10-4.

Brister went 4-for-5 with a walk in the 18-6 victory, which ended  after seven innings by the mercy rule. Zion Pettigrew was 3-for-5 with  a double and three RBIs in the onslaught. Blake Mann got the victory  in relief.

Kal Youngquist had two RBIs for Kirkwood in the 10-4 loss in the opener.

Kirkwood won the four-game series against NIACC, 3-1. The Eagles  raised their records to 20-11 overall and 7-5 in the ICCAC conference  on their weekend trip to Mason City.

Witzany boosts Mount Mercy softball

Mount Mercy freshman Jayna Witzany never imagined she'd be asked to  pitch in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader against Central  Methodist, but that's exactly what happened.

Tawny Menster, Mount Mercy's top pitcher, took a line drove off her  pitching hand on just the second batter she faced in the top of the  first inning and had to leave the game.

Witzany answered the call and pitched the rest of the game as the  Mustangs won the opener, 6-4. Menster iced her right hand after the  leaving the opener and took her normal position in right field for  Game 2 with tape on her hand.

Central Methodist won the nightcap, 7-1, at Busse Field in the Heart  of America Conference doubleheader.
