KCC baseball team drops twinbill

The Kirkwood baseball team spent a long, frustrating day at the  ballpark Monday.

Iowa Lakes swept the Eagles, 4-1 and 12-2 in five innings, in an ICCAC  doubleheader at Kirkwood.

The twin defeats left Kirkwood at 16-10 overall and 4-4 in the league.  Iowa Lakes raised its marks to 11-7 overall and 3-5 in the conference.

Kirkwood got only four hits in the 4-1 loss in the opener. The Eagles  loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but managed only a  single run on an infield error.

Kirkwood managed only three hits in the 12-2 loss in the nightcap and  got swept off its own field in five innings.

Bennett shines as Eagles sink Lakers

The Kirkwood baseball team swept Iowa Lakes, 5-2 and 10-1, in an ICCAC conference doubleheader at Kirkwood Sunday.

Jackson Bennett pitched six shutout innings in the 5-2 victory before being touched for two runs in the seventh. He allowed only two hits. Cameron Cowan got the final out to collect a save.

Zion Pettigrew belted a home run and drove in two runs in the opener. Levi Usher had two RBIs and two stolen bases. Kirkwood scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to snap a scoreless game.

Kal Youngquist went 2-for-3 with four RBIs in the 10-1 verdict in the nightcap. Usher, Pettigrew, Corey Graham and Gave Lux had two hits. Taylor Jackson scored three times. Usher and Lux scored twice. Pettigrew had three RBIs.

Cameron Leff tossed five strong innings for the victory in Game 2, allowing three hits and one run with seven strikeouts. Blake Mann pitched two scoreless innings in relief.

DeWitte socks 2 homers for Eagles

NORFOLK, Neb. - Haley DeWitte belted two home runs Sunday to help the Kirkwood softball team blank Northeast Community College, 9-0, in the second game of their ICCAC conference doubleheader.

The fourth-ranked Eagles won the opener, 12-3, for the sweep.

Kirkwood hit five home runs in the doubleheader and raised its records to 19-6 overall and 2-0 in the league. Northeast fell to 2-18 overall and 0-2 in the conference.

Lauren Klaahsen went 4-for-4 with a double, homer and three RBIs in the first game. She also scored three times. Randyn Carter was 3-for-4 with two doubles and scored three runs. Jamye Finn was 3-for-4 and had four stolen bases.

Jessi Butler hit two doubles and drove in three runs in Game 1. Lauren Kuch had two RBIs. Autum Barthelman had two hits. Rachel Stewart hit a solo homer. Erin Hocker pitched a complete game for the victory.

Menster's slam lifts Mount Mercy

Tawny Menster belted a grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning Sunday to snap a 5-5 tie and give the Mount Mercy softball team a 9-5 victory over Culver-Stockton in the first game of their Heart of America Conference doubleheader at Busse Field.

Culver-Stockton won the second game, 9-4.

Mount Mercy trailed 5-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning of the opener. They tied the game, 5-5, then Menster delivered her walk-off homer with the bases loaded.

Menster was 2-for-4 in the ballgame and scored twice. Jessica Miller, Jess Heick and Morgan Braughton also had two hits. Jolona Shield drove in two runs. Miller scored twice. Jayna Witzany picked up the victory in relief of Menster.

Mount Mercy baseball drops pair

PERU, Neb. - Peru State swept the Mount Mercy baseball team, 7-1 and  4-3, in a Heart of America Conference doubleheader Sunday.

Mount Mercy fell to 14-15 overall and 9-10 in the league. Peru State  raised its marks to 13-13 overall and 10-3 in the conference.

The Mustangs collected only three singles in the 7-1 loss in the  opener. Chase Costa collected an RBI as a pinch-hitter.

Mount Mercy trailed, 3-2, heading into the top of the ninth inning in  the nightcap. The Mustangs scored to tie the game on a pinch-hit homer  by Costa, but Peru State tallied in the bottom of the ninth for a  walk-off victory.
