Morrison, Peters lead KCC golfers to title

GALESBURG, Ill. - The Kirkwood men's golf team dominated the competition at the Jim Wetherbee Memorial Invitational Saturday.

Ryan Morrison captured top honors at 4-under-par 140 for the 36 hole tournament with rounds of 68 and 72. Dawson placed second at 2-under 142 with steady rounds of 71 both days.

Will Babcock of Kirkwood tied for fourth at 4-over 148 at the Soangetaha Country Club.

Kirkwood claimed the team championship at 4-over 580 for a 30-shot margin over Edgewood College in the 20-team event.

No. 8 Mustangs spike 2 opponents

LA CROSSE, Wis. - The eighth-ranked Mount Mercy men's volleyball team won both of its matches Saturday in La Crosse, Wis.

The Mustangs trimmed Saint Xavier in five sets, 25-22, 25-23, 18-25, 22-25, 15-10, in their first match. Mount swept Viterbo, 25-16, 25-13, 25-16, in their second outing of the day.

The sweep lifted the Mustangs to 21-7 heading into the Heart of America Conference tournament.

Andrew Colantone collected 37 assists, seven blocks and seven digs to lead Mount Mercy to the five-set victory over Saint Xavier. Julian Armendano had 13 kills and Nikola Stoimenov had 11. Evan Gaskill contributed 12 digs and Mitchell Wannahwilai had 10.

Nickelson stars for Mount Mercy track

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Luke Nickelson of Mount Mercy won two events at the Viking Invitational track meet Saturday at Augustana College.

Nickelson captured the long jump at 7.04 meters and also took the triple jump at 13.98 meters.

Kathryn Vander Poel won the 1500 meter run to lead a strong performance by Mount Mercy women in the event. Vander Poel finished first in 4 minutes, 51.34 seconds, with Andrea Ertz placing second in 4:53.38 and Vanessa Cortes taking fourth in 4:56.90.

James Lindstrom of Mount Mercy took fourth in the men's 1500 in 4:05.34. Connor Christopherson was sixth in the 400 meter dash in 51.27 seconds.

Peru State blanks Mount Mercy

PERU, Neb. - The Mount Mercy baseball team was blanked by Peru State, 5-0, in a Heart of America Conference game Saturday.

The Mustangs saw their five-game winning streak come to an end, dropping them to 14-13 overall and 9-8 in the league. Peru State raised its records to 12-13 overall and 9-3 in the conference.

Mustangs rained out in Purgatory

NOBLESVILLE, Ind. - The second round of the Purgatory Intercollegiate golf tournament was rained out Saturday, shrinking the event to the 18 holes that were played Friday.

William Bruyeres of Mount Mercy fired a 1-under-par 71 Friday and tied for eighth place, four shots behind the leaders.

Natalea Cook of Mount Mercy shot a 4-over 76 Friday and tied for eighth place in the women's standings.
