Mustangs eye Heart volleyball crown

DES MOINES - Mary Kay Van Oort and the Mount Mercy Mustangs raked in some of the top honors on the Heart of America all-conference men's volleyball team on Friday.

Now Van Oort and the Mustangs are looking to capture top honors at the conference tournament and punch their ticket to the NAIA national meet.

The eighth-ranked Mustangs swept Clarke, 25-23, 25-22, 25-17, in the semifinals of the conference tournament Friday afternoon and will face fourth-ranked Grand View in the finals Saturday afternoon.

The tournament champion will earn an automatic spot in the national tournament. The runner-up could get an at-large bid to the national meet, depending on how the other conference tournaments unfold.

KCC golfers eye title at Wartburg

WAVERLY - The Kirkwood men's golf team is locked in a tight battle with DMACC for top honors at the Wartburg Spring Invitational.

The Eagles finished the first round Friday with a four-man score of even-par 288, which is two shots behind DMACC heading into the final 18 holes Saturday at the Prairie Links Golf Course.

Ben Epperly of Kirkwood fired a 3-under-par 69 and trails Noah Hartman of DMACC by one shot. Ryan Morrison of Kirkwood is tied for third place at 2-under 70.

Tim Brecht joins crew at Prospect Meadows

Tim Brecht loves baseball and fast-pitch softball, he greatly enjoys  working with kids and he likes being involved with the community.

He's found a perfect job that combines his passions at Prospect Meadows.

Brecht, 57, has been hired to help with community relations and  marketing at Prospect Meadows, which opens this spring.

He'll be involved with camps, leagues, tournaments, classes and  bringing as many kids and teams to Prospect Meadows as possible.  He'll also be working to help expand the League of Dreams program,  along with the Miracle League for people with disabilities.

Brecht, who began working at Prospect Meadows about a month ago, did  not realize the complex was so close to being ready with eight  regulation diamonds and the Miracle Field.

He'll be working with General Manager Jack Roeder, assistant GM  Steve James and the Board of Directors to help make Prospect Meadows  a big success.

Register for 2019 IWSL softball season

The Iowa Women's Softball League is preparing for the 2019 campaign as  the only summer college league in Iowa.

All current and former college softball players are eligible. This  will be the third year for the IWSL and it has been greeted with open  arms by the players, college coaches and softball community.

There will be four teams in the IWSL in the Eastern Division in Cedar  Rapids this summer. All of the games will be played at the beautiful  new field at Mount Mercy University.

There will be a series of eight Sunday doubleheaders for a 16-game  season. Each team will play a doubleheader each Sunday, either at 11  a.m. or 3 p.m. There are no practices during the week.

The playing dates are June 2-9-16-23 and July 7-14-21-28 There are no  games on June 30 for a mid-season vacation.

Mack helps Mount Mercy slam Clarke

Michelle Mack belted a grand-slam in the sixth inning Wednesday to  help Mount Mercy top Clarke, 5-2, in the first game of their Heart of  America Conference doubleheader at Busse Field.

The Mustangs took the nightcap, 5-1, on a rainy evening in northeast  Cedar Rapids for the sweep.

The twin-killing lifted Mount Mercy into first place in the North  Division standings with an 8-2 record in the conference. The Mustangs  are 15-7 overall for the campaign.

Mount Mercy trailed, 2-1, in the sixth inning of the opener when Mack  lofted a fly ball over the fence in left field with the bases loaded.  Tawny Menster (6-0) retired Clarke in the top of the seventh to finish  the victory.
