Hocker twirls shutout for Eagles

MASON CITY - Erin Hocker tossed a two-hit shutout Wednesday as the  seventh-ranked Kirkwood Eagles blanked NIACC, 2-0, in the first game  of their ICCAC doubleheader in Mason City.

NIACC won the second game, 13-8.

Hocker struck out 10 batters and did not allow any walks in her gem. Taleah Smith socked a two-run homer in the fifth inning for the only  runs in the ballgame. Rachel Stewart had two hits.

Kirkwood jumped to a 5-0 lead in the second inning in the nightcap, but NIACC responded with 13 runs in its next four at-bats for the  victory.

Shelby Hulsebus was 3-for-4 and scored three times for the Eagles in the 13-8 setback. Jamie Finn and Stewart had two hits. Hocker was  saddled with the loss in relief.

Kirkwood baseball knocks off Parkland

The Kirkwood baseball team exploded for nine runs in the second inning  Wednesday and topped Parkland, 11-5, in a non-conference game at  Kirkwood.

Levi Usher, Taylor Jackson, Zion Pettigrew and Kal Youngquist had two  RBIs for the Eagles (17-10). Pettigrew, Youngquist and Corey Graham  had two hits. Usher, Jackson and Joel Thompson scored twice.

BlakeMann pitched three spotless innings in relief for the victory.  He retired nine straight batters and had four strikeouts.

Menster helps Mustangs sweep into 1st place

OSKALOOSA - Tawny Menster won one game with her arm Tuesday and helped  win another game with her bat.

Her exploits helped the Mount Mercy softball team sweep William Penn,  3-0 and 5-3, and move into a tie for first place in the North Division  of the Heart of America Conference.

Menster (5-0) pitched a three-hit shutout in the 3-0 victory in Game 1  with five strikeouts and no walks. She belted a three-run homer in the  5-3 victory in Game 2 to give the Mustangs the lead in the fifth inning.

The sweep lifted Mount Mercy to 13-7 overall and 6-2 in the  conference. The Mustangs are tied with Grand View for first place in  the North Division of the Heart of America.

Payton Bruner, Emily Oler and Sydney Robertson had two hits in the  opener. Oler belted a home run and drove in two runs.

Mount Mercy baseball nipped by Penn

OSKALOOSA - The Mount Mercy baseball team was trimmed by William Penn,  4-3, in a Heart of America Conference game in Oskaloosa Tuesday.

The Mustangs fell to 14-16 overall and 9-11 in the conference. The  Statesmen raised their records to 22-6 overall and 8-3 in the league.

Evan Jackson had two hits for Mount Mercy. The Mustangs took a 3-2  lead in the top of the eighth, but William Penn scored twice in the  bottom of the eighth and held on for the victory.

KCC softball team scores 35 runs in sweep

CRESTON - The Kirkwood softball team enjoyed a field day against Southwestern Community College Monday with 35 runs, 40 hits and three  home runs.

The fourth-ranked Eagles swept the ICCAC twinbill, 14-4 in five  innings and 21-4 in six innings.

Kirkwood raised its records to 21-6 overall and 4-0 in the conference.  Southwestern, which did not field a team last year due to a lack of players, fell to 2-15 overall and 0-4 in the league.

Randyn Carter went 3-for-3 with four RBIs in the 14-4 victory in the  opener. Lauren Kuch was 3-for-3 and scored four times. Lauren Klaahsen  was 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs.

Shelby Hulsebus was 2-for-4 with a triple and home run and scored  twice. Rachel Stewart was 2-for-3 and scored three times. Haley DeWitt  socked a solo home run.

Erin Hocker (10-4) pitched four innings in the opener for the triumph.
