Krob helps Kirkwood baseball sweep NIACC

MASON CITY - Kirkwood baseball coach Todd Rima enjoyed his return to NIACC on Saturday as the Eagles swept a conference doubleheader, 4-3 and 5-4, in Mason City.

Rima spent 11 years as the head coach at NIACC before moving to Kirkwood, where he led the Eagles to the national tournament for the first time in 19 years last season.

Austin Krob, who has struggled on the mound for Kirkwood this year, played a pivotal role in both victories Saturday in relief.

Krob pitched 2 1/3 innings in relief to get the victory in the 4-3 triumph in the opener, and he tossed the final inning in the 5-4 victory in the nightcap to notch a save.

The sweep lifted Kirkwood to 19-10 overall and 6-4 in the ICCAC Conference standings.

Mustangs win 3 twinbills in row

The Mount Mercy softball team put an exclamation point on an excellent week Saturday by sweeping Missouri Valley, 5-3 and 7-2, in a Heart of America Conference doubleheader at Busse Field.

The Mustangs won all three of their doubleheaders during the week by sweeping William Penn on Tuesday, Clarke on Wednesday and Missouri Valley on Saturday.

Mount Mercy raised its records to 17-7 overall and 10-2 in the league, tied for first place with Grand View in the North Division of the Heart of America Conference.

Tawny Menster raised her record to 7-0 in the 5-3 victory in the opener by pitching six strong innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits. Jayna Witzany collected two strikeouts in relief in the seventh inning for a save.

Kirkwood golfers nipped for title

WAVERLY - The Kirkwood men's golf team lost the Wartburg Spring Invitational by one shot Saturday.

The DMACC Bears nipped the Eagles, 584 tp 585, for the 36-hole championship at the Prairie Links Golf Course in a three-way photo finish among three premier junior college teams.

Southwestern finished third with a two-day total of 586, just another shot behind Kirkwood, in a wild scramble for the title.

KCC's Hocker tosses 4-hit shutout

Kirkwood freshman Erin Hocker tossed a four-hit shutout as the seventh-ranked Eagles blanked fifth-ranked Iowa Central, 4-0, in the first game of their ICCAC conference doubleheader at Kirkwood Saturday.

Iowa Central won the second game, 8-2.

Hocker struck out eight batters and walked only two in the 4-0 shutout. Lauren Klaahsen had two doubles for the Eagles to continue her hot hitting. Rachel Stewart, London Jackson and Klaahsen had RBIs.

Klaahsen socked a solo home run in the 8-2 loss in the nightcap.

Lohaus sparkles for Mount Mercy

Tanner Lohaus sparkled on the mound for the Mount Mercy baseball team Saturday afternoon.

Lohaus pitched seven strong innings as the Mustangs clipped Grand View, 7-1, in the second game of their Heart of America Conference doubleheader at Mount Mercy.

Grand View won the opener, 5-3.

Lohaus allowed only one run on three hits, with 10 strikeouts and one walk. The right-hander from Iowa City West raised his record to 3-and-4 with the impressive outing.

Owen Oreskovich went 3-for-4 in the 7-1 victory. Nick Sueppel was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Collin Shrader was 2-for-3 and scored twice.

Sueppel was 2-for-4 with a solo home run in the 5-3 setback. Corbin Day was 3-for-3. Chili Moseley, returning from an injury, was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
